Cary I. Knoop's Obituary
CHARLESTON, IL - Cary I. Knoop, age 97 of Charleston, passed away on Sunday, May 12, 2019 while at Charleston Rehab and Skilled Nursing. His family will host a celebration of his life on Sunday, June 2, 2019 from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. at Roc's Blackfront located at 410 6th Street in Charleston. Inurnment will be at Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston at a later date. Donations in his honor may be made to the Charleston VFW Paul McVey Post 1592 or the Coles County Arts Council. Gifts may be mailed in care of Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920. Cary was born May 5, 1922 in Claypool, Indiana, to the late Samuel and Irma (Bowen) Knoop. He married Marjorie E. Funk on June 3, 1944 in Decatur, Illinois and they shared 70 years of marriage prior to her death on November 29, 2014. Left to cherish their many wonderful memories are his children: daughters Marsha Dolson and Karin Knoop, both of Indianapolis, Indiana and Mike Knoop and wife Diane of Charleston; 4 grandchildren and their families: Christopher Dolson, wife Nicole and their daughter Charlotte, Kylie Knoop and Jon Waggle and their children Jackson and Elizabeth, Stacy Dolson and her son, Shiloh, Bill Knoop and his fiancé Amber: and a sister, Susanne Paulsen of Val Paraiso, Indiana. Cary was also preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Knoop; a son-in-law, Carl Dolson; and two brothers, Paul and Lowell. Cary proudly and honorably served his country during WWII with the United States Army and was a life member of the Charleston VFW Paul McVey Post 1592. He attained his Bachelors Degree from Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois and his MFA from the University of Illinois. He was a Sculpture and 3-D Design Professor in the Art Department at Eastern Illinois University for many years. He was also a member of Phi Beta Kappa, a professional educational fraternity and University Professionals Union. Cary was recognized as an extremely talented local artist. He was actively involved with the Coles County Arts Council and the Arts in the Park held yearly in Effingham, Illinois. His expertise was often called upon to assist with the construction of props, scenery and masks used in EIU theatre productions and he constructed an exhibition display for use at the Illinois State Fair. Through the years he served as a judge for art competitions, beauty pageants, parade floats and costuming. Cary was an active member of the Coles County Democrats and also volunteered at the Lincoln Douglas Debate Museum. His rare blood type motivated him to give blood which he did on a regular basis. Cary will be missed by his loving family, colleagues and many friends. Graveside ServiceThe graveside inurnment service for Cary Knoop was held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 8, 2019 at Roselawn Cemetery. Military Honors were provided by the Charleston VFW Paul McVey Post 1592 and Charleston American Legion Post #93 combined Honor Guard. Those participating were Mike Zimmerle, Detail Commander; Dale Downs, Chaplain; Bill Reed and John Gelb, Honor Guard; Gale Poteete, Color Bearer; Hatty Hughes, Bugler; and Paul Buerster, Gary Grounds, Darrell Nees, Mark Beabout, Chet Campbell, Dave Finley and Eugene Winnett, Riflemen. The Flag Detail was provided by the Illinois National Guard Military Funeral Honors Detail.
