Dr. Carol Marie Helwig, age 87, of Charleston, IL, passed away peacefully at 2:30 AM on Saturday, April 19, 2025, at Willow Breeze Hospice House in Mattoon, IL Carol was born on December 8, 1937, in Long Island, New York, the daug Read Obituary
Dr. Helwig was my academic advisor at Eastern Illinois University from 1989-1992. She was instrumental in pushing me to lead ACEI. I have wonderful memories of our ACEI trip to San Diego, California and day trip across the border into Mexico. Dr. Helwig remained an influence long after college graduation. We exchanged Christmas cards with notes every year... until this year. I had a feeling that she wasn't doing well and sent a card this school year to check on her and let her know that I was praying for her. I will miss her precious and encouraging notes. Dr. Helwig was such a blessing. I pray that she is safe in the arms of Jesus now.

Carol and I shared our professional lives from 1970 until she retired. We served as Chairs together commencing in a time when there were not many women Chairs. Additionally, Carol, Ron and I shared many professional and personal times across the years. Carol was always very calm and intentional. Professionally she never outwardly seemed to take ambage nor was she one to bring her emotions to her work environment,
Carol loved her biological family, her sister, her sister's husband and her nephews and their wives. She loved Ron, Ashley, Meridith, and Katie, She had a special place in her heart for Katie. She shared family news and her family events.
Carol loved Florida and her place in Florida. She looked forward to her reunions with her New York friends and other friends who had moved away. Carol held on to friends; once you were Carol's friend you were a friend forever.
I can not be at the service or visitation as my husband and I will be in Rochester, Minn. as he has some health issues.

Following my retirement as Director of the Academic Advisement Center I worked an additional seven years as both an advisor to graduate students seeking teacher certification and advising juniors and seniors majoring in elementary education. As Carol was head of the Elementary Education Department I worked closely with Carol. She provided me with an office and secretarial assistance and we worked closely together. I found her to be very helpful and included me in her department meetings so I was able to keep informed of any curricular changes in the elementary education requirements. It was indeed a pleasure to work in her department.
