At an early age it was obvious that Carl was quite the entrepreneur and astute businessman. At the age of 14 he and his brother Bill bought their own hay-baler and went into business - this was only the beginning. Carl went on to establish the Furry Grain Company in 1963, H & F Trucking in 1964 and previously Carl and Evelyn partnered with Keith and Ruth as owners of Furry Sons Warehouse. He always maintained his love for farming and has been a part of the farming community since 1950. Carl has been a member of the Presbyterian Church family all his life. He also served on the County Board as President and was instrumental in the approval and installation of CR 1000 which now runs from Route 130 west to Route 121. Carl's sense of adventure was endless. He raced midget cars and was a flat track motorcycle racer in the 1950's. His love for motorcycles continued throughout his life and it was a love he shared with his sons and grandsons. He was one of the founding members of the Neoga based Central Illinois Motorcycle Club and it was always a good day when he could be out on his Harley. At the age of 40 Carl attained his private pilot's license enabling him and Evelyn to travel to various destinations throughout the United States in their Cessna 210. He thoroughly enjoyed a conversation on the topic of politics and considered it an honor when they entertained Ronald Reagan as a guest in their home. Carl was a man of good character and earned the respect and friendship of many. Carl was proud of his family heritage having been a part of Coles County history since 1837 and for nine generations. This pride was extended to his own family. He was a devoted husband to Evelyn, a loving father to his sons, and a wonderful father-in-law to their wives. He devoted a great deal of time to his grandchildren sharing with them his love for fishing, mushroom hunting, and animals. Carl was overjoyed at being able to name his last great-grandson. Carl was blessed with a loving family and numerous friends and they all have wonderful and memorable stories to share about this quality gentleman they knew as husband, dad, grandpa, great-grandpa, brother and friend.Click to view Family Memorial Video.
