Amber J. Buckley-Shaklee's Obituary
URBANA, IL - Amber Buckley-Shaklee, age 31 of Urbana, formerly of Charleston, passed away on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 while at Presence Covenant Medical Center in Urbana. Visitation for family and friends will be held Saturday, November 7, 2015 from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston. A time for sharing memories will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday immediately following the visitation. In accordance with Amber's style, casual attire is requested and clothing supporting her favorite sporting teams or 3 E LOVE are especially welcomed. It is requested that thoughtful donations in her honor be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Gifts may be left during the visitation or time of sharing, or may be mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920. Amber was born May 17, 1984 in Urbana, IL to Mark Shaklee and Bonnie Buckley. She is survived by her mother, Bonnie Buckley of Charleston; a sister, Shannon Buckley-Shaklee of Seoul, South Korea; a brother, Ryan Buckley-Shaklee and wife Megan of Homewood, IL; two nieces and a nephew also of Homewood, Bella, Emi and Theodore Shaklee; a paternal grandmother, Alice Richey of Enid, OK; and an extended family consisting of aunts, uncles and girl cousins. Amber was preceded in death by her father, Mark Shaklee; her maternal grandparents, Harold Buckley and Doris Buckley Manke; her paternal grandfather, Ivan Shaklee; and two step-grandfathers, Herb Manke and Robert Richey. Amber was a 2002 graduate of Charleston High School and furthered her education at the University of Illinois. She earned her Bachelors Degree in Sociology in 2006 and was currently a Doctoral student. For the past 9 years Amber has been employed at U of I as a teaching assistant in the Sociology Department and was a union member of the Graduate Employees Organization. Amber always set lofty goals and never allowed her disability to deter or hamper her from attaining those goals. She was a passionate advocate for social justice and a leader in confronting and speaking out regarding barriers for those with disabilities. She served as co-chair of Illinois Imagines Statewide Policy Committee in support of statewide policy for women with disabilities who have been sexually assaulted, and was at one time a volunteer for SACIS. She served three separate summer internships; two in Washington, DC with the National Council on Disability and the Office of Civil Rights in the U.S. State Department, and the other in Madison, WI with the Veterans Administration Hospital. Through Mobility International she attended their conference in Costa Rica and volunteered with Senior Citizens in Peru. She organized and administered Facebook groups such as Democrats with Disabilities and People with Disabilities for Hillary. Amber also knew how to have fun. She enjoyed her pets and was truly a sports fanatic. She avidly cheered for the St. Louis Cardinals, Green Bay Packers, Illinois Basketball and U.S. Women's and Men's Soccer teams. Amber always tried to make the world a better place and therefore the world was a better place with her in it. She will be missed not only by her loving family and many friends, but by so many that she represented with her voice.Click to view Amber's memorial video.
