Alice E. Stotler's Obituary
CHARLESTON, IL - Alice Elizabeth Stotler, age 90 of Charleston, entered her heavenly home on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 while at the Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home in Mattoon. The Funeral Mass honoring and celebrating her life will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 3, 2016 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, located at 921 Madison Avenue in Charleston,with Father Hyland Smith officiating. It is requested that thoughtful donations in her honor be made to the St. Charles Women in care of Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920. Alice was born June 8, 1926 in Colorado Springs, CO, and was a daughter of the late Eugene and Marjorie (Harmon) Brown. She married Lowell Elton Gates and from that union she was blessed with two daughters. She is survived by her daughters, Linda Ann Gates of Charleston and Debra Ann Gates of San Marcos, CA; four grandchildren, Tracey Tylman and husband Kalen Buechler of Huntsville, Alabama, Dustin Tylman of Lake Balboa, California, Daniel Tylman of Charleston and Charissa St. Clair of San Marcos, California; two great-grandsons, Aiden and Cohen Buechler; a sister, Betty Fenske of Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by two brothers, Eugene and Jack Brown. Alice was employed for many years as the office manager and bookkeeper retiring from Peters Van and Storage in Aurora, IL, where she met and married Roy Stotler. After retiring she and her husband moved to Arkansas. When Roy was diagnosed with cancer they relocated to Charleston to be closer to her daughter and family. After Roy's death, Alice became active in a number of social and volunteer agencies. She enjoyed helping others and volunteered with the Life Span Center, and especially enjoying assisting with the income taxes. She was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Charleston and of the St. Cecelia Circle Women's Ministry. Alice loved nature and animals, especially her cats and watching the many birds outside her window. She was an avid reader, loved the challenge of working crossword puzzles, and was an adept bridge player. Alice enjoyed her role as a mother, grandmother and homemaker. She was extremely supportive of her grandchildren and their interests which included attending their many musical programs. Her family has been blessed with many fond memories to cherish.
