CHARLESTON, IL – Ulla Helena Foley, age 96 of Charleston and formerly of Macomb, Illinois, now resides in her Heavenly Home as she passed away on Saturday, May 16, 2020 while at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center. Her family will hold a private celebration of her life and she will be inurned at a later date next to her husband in the Oakland Cemetery, Oakland, Illinois. Memorials in her honor may be made to the Coles County Animal Shelter and may be mailed in care of Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, Illinois 61920.
Ulla was born in Turku, Finland on July 14, 1923. Her father was Fredrik Johannes Rauha, a loved teacher in Turku and her mother was Helmi (Jacklin) Rauha, who was originally from Scotland. Ulla immigrated to the United States when she was 35 years of age and was already fluent in the English language as well as 5 additional languages. She was also quite a talented concert pianist. She married Rolla Foley who preceded her in death in 1971. She was the mother of one child, Mary Ethridge who preceded her in death on October 21, 2019. Surviving is her son-in-law, Randy L. Ethridge of Charleston; four adoring grandchildren, Katie Ethridge of Orange Park, Florida, Jenny Waldrop, Michael Ethridge and wife Daylea, and Annie Banton and husband Gideon, all of Charleston; six (soon to be eight) great-grandchildren, Nautica Long, Kahliq Wilkins, Navaeh and Jayla Ethridge, Nakenzie Waldrop and Euriah Banton; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ulla was also preceded by a brother, Onni Rauha and three sisters, Iris, Signe and Irja Rauha.
Ulla was raised in the Lutheran faith. She worked for many years as a librarian for Western Illinois University in Macomb. Ulla’s outlook always remained positive no matter life’s hardships. She was a kind and loving woman with an ever present smile. Her loving kindness extended beyond her family and friends and felt that animals needed to be loved and cared for as well. Ulla will always be remembered for the kindnesses that her life radiated to those around her.
