CHARLESTON, IL – Nancy Sue Simmonds, age 75, of Charleston and formerly of Mattoon, entered her Heavenly Home on Saturday, February 15, 2020 while surrounded by her loving family. Visitation will be held from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 21, 2020 at First Church of God located at 1225 Montgomery Drive in Charleston. The Memorial Service, honoring and celebrating her life, will begin at 5:00 p.m., following the visitation, with Pastors Walt Truex and Jeremy Morton officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date at Zion Hill Cemetery located southwest of Mattoon in Paradise Township. Memorial Gifts in her honor may be made to Lincolnland Hospice and left at the visitation/service or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920.
Nancy was born February 8, 1945 in Decatur, Illinois and was the daughter of the late Robert “Bob” and Wilma (Switzer) Parsons. She was introduced to a young man in a USAF uniform, and on March 20, 1965 in Mattoon, Nancy became the wife of Steven Simmonds. She is survived by Steve, her loving and devoted husband of nearly 55 years; her sons, Tony Simmonds and wife Cheri of Bend, Oregon and Sam Simmonds and wife Amanda of Franklin, Tennessee; three grandsons, Creighton, Cooper and Corbin Simmonds; two sisters, Carol Carter and husband Mike of Mattoon and Judy Jarhaus and husband Dick of Neoga; a brother, Robert Parsons and wife Sally of Sullivan, Illinois; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
Nancy was a 1964 graduate of Mattoon High School. Prior to her employment as a payroll clerk with the Douglas County Clerk’s office in Tuscola, she worked with her husband Steve at Simmonds Insurance Agency in Mattoon. Nancy was a woman with a deep and abiding faith. As a devoted member of the First Church of God family, she gave of her time and talents, teaching Sunday School and singing in the church choir.
Nancy maintained several close friendships throughout the years, but family was always first and foremost. She and Steve shared a wonderful bond of love and friendship and were usually inseparable – where you saw one you saw the other. She was also a devoted mother whose love and support was steadfast and freely given not only to her sons but to the amazing women that are her daughters-in-law. She cherished her role as a doting grandmother and enjoyed her visits with her grandsons whenever possible. Nancy held a special place in the hearts of many and will forever be cherished and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
MEMORIAL SERVICE
The Memorial Service celebrating the life of Nancy Simmonds was held at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 21, 2020 at First Church of God, 1225 Montgomery Drive in Charleston with Pastors Walt Truex and Jeremy Morton officiating. Musical selections included: "Going Hone", "Sheltered in the Arms of God" and "It Is Well With My Soul". Inurnment will be at a later time at Zion Hill Cemetery in Paradise Township, rural Mattoon, Illinois.
