Mary (Grissom) McDade

Mary McDade, 100, of Toledo, Illinois formerly of Charleston, Illinois passed away peacefully Friday, March 17, 2023 at Cumberland Rehab and Health in Greenup, Illinois. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston, Illinois. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until time of service at the chapel. Burial will be in the Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Mattoon, Illinois. Memorials in her honor may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital- St. Louis, MO and left at the visitation/service or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920.

Mary was born December 24, 1922 in Union Twp, Cumberland County the daughter of Oris and Zetta (Tipsword) Grissom. She married the love of her life Walter L. McDade on February 14, 1942 and he preceded her in death on November 21, 2013. She is survived by her son, Steve (Brenda) McDade of Toledo, Illinois; one daughter, Debra Ohnesorge of Toledo, Illinois; five grandchildren, Mike McDade of Rockhill, SC, Tina (Mark) Warfel of Lincoln, Illinois, Amy (Shawn) Elam of Chillicothe, Ohio, Ben Ohnesorge of Troy, Illinois and Shanna (Chris) Kessler of Strasburg, Illinois;15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Jennie (Neal) Terrell; one sister-in-law, Evelyn Grissom; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Linda Louise; four brothers, Donnie Ingram, Carl Grissom, Elwood Grissom, and Fred Grissom; two sisters, Irene Floyd and Beulah Vaughn; and one son-in-law, Dennis Ohnesorge.

Mary retired from Eastern Illinois University in 1984. She enjoyed bowling, camping, boating, and had a passion for gardening and canning her produce. She loved the game Chance and Canasta.  She was a loving and kind person who enjoyed taking care of people. She will be dearly missed.
