Laura M. Hussey Obituary

Laura M. Hussey, age 95, was born April 28, 1928 and passed away at her home on December 23, 2023 with family at her side. She was born in Manistique, Michigan to Jasper and Cecelia Laurion. She graduated from Manistique High School in 1946 and earned a Registered Nurse (RN) degree from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1948. Laura worked as a nurse in Manistique, MI where she met and married Bob Hussey on December 27, 1950.

Laura was preceded in death by her parents, Jasper and Cecelia Laurion, by her husband Bob, by her grandson Kyle Wargo, and by all of her siblings their spouses- Marie (Jim) Olsen, Lucille (Joe) Barker, Clem (Sally) Laurion, Gilbert (Martha) Laurion, Fritz (Joyce) Laurion. Laura is survived by her children Daniel (Judy) Hussey, Patrick (Maria) Hussey, Kevin (Kathryn) Hussey, Kathleen Hussey, Kelly (Gail) Hussey, Erin (Tony Batya) Hussey, and Thomas (Sue) Hussey. She is also survived by 20 grandchildren and 49 great grandchildren.

After their early years together in the UP of Michigan and in Wisconsin, Laura and Bob moved to Charleston where they raised seven children. During their many decades in Charleston, both Bob and Laura enjoyed employment at EIU and involvement in the Catholic parish at St. Charles Borromeo Church. Laura earned her bachelor’s degree in health studies from EIU in 1975 and worked for many years at the EIU Health Service, retiring in 1991. Laura was an early advocate of breastfeeding and served as participant and leader for the La Leche League in Charleston. Bob and Laura enjoyed square dancing and Laura danced and assisted with lessons that Bob taught in their basement when he became both caller and teacher. Laura and Bob lived a life of faith, love, and generosity. After experiencing a significant neck injury in 2020, Laura continued to live in her home with the ongoing support of her children. The family wishes to acknowledge our sister Kathleen, who moved in with mom in March of 2020 as a primary caregiver, and Kevin and family for their ongoing daily support. In addition to these local family members, we are grateful for the ongoing respite and support of all siblings, their spouses, and children, as well as the help and support from local friends, the parishioners and staff at St. Charles Borromeo, and for the support of Hospice care in her final days. Laura loved family time, lighting up with each visit and with each opportunity to hold the newest babies and interact joyfully with all generations within this large extended family. She continued to share her love and generosity even as she prayed for this transition from life on earth to life in the shelter of God.
