ASHMORE, IL – Joseph Jay Checkley, age 57 of rural Ashmore, Illinois, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, June 4, 2020. A private visitation will be held for his family. A celebration of his life will be held at a Graveside Service at Enon Cemetery located in Ashmore Township, on Monday, June 8, 2020 at 12:30 p.m. Memorial gifts may be made to Camp New Hope and mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920.
Joe was born December 8, 1962 in Charleston, the son of Monty and Barbara (Ellison) Checkley. Joe is survived by a loving and devoted family which includes his parents, Monty and Barbara of Ashmore; two sisters, Bonny Stark and husband Steve of Ashmore and Pam Checkley of Mattoon; two nieces, Kelsey Stark and fiancé Nathan Pollard and Ashley Stark, all of Ashmore; and two great-nephews, Preston and Owen Pollard. Joe was preceded in death by his grandparents, Roy and Madonna Checkley and Ralph and Mildred Ellison.
Joe attended the Armstrong Center in Mattoon and was employed at CCAR Industries for 34 years. He was a member of the Ashmore United Presbyterian Church and was a regular camper at Camp New Hope. He also participated in Special Olympics at both the local and state levels, proudly sporting many medals. Joe was an avid follower of NASCAR and it was quite obvious that Tony Stewart was his favorite driver. He enjoyed bowling, basketball, boating and swimming; and spent many hours riding his three-wheeler and chauffeuring his great-nephews around on the family golf cart. He was a fan of country music and the signature voice of Johnny Cash. Joe always enjoyed spending time with his family and he will truly be missed by those who dearly loved him.
