John R. “Bob” Bennett, age 88, of Charleston, IL passed away peacefully at 9:28 a.m. on Thursday, October 26, 2023. He was born April 18, 1935 in Charleston, IL, the son of Homer Loved Bennett and Dorothy Margaret (Drury) Bennett. On January 5, 1965 he married Darla Jane Fleck in Silver Springs, MD.

Survivors include his children, Ron Bennett (Luann) of Lerna, IL, Julie Young of Cape Coral, FL, and Cheryl Myrick of Mattoon, IL; grandchildren, Holly Pennington (Andrew) of Janesville, IL, Ronnie Bennett (Kim) of Gays, IL, Jessica Dukeman (Mitch) of Johnstown, IL, Travis Bennett (Heidi Barr-Fiance) of Mattoon, IL, Leandra Young of Cape Coral, FL, and Ian Myrick of Gray Court, SC; seven great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; and siblings, Martha Shaw of Trilla, IL and Clara Pedigo (Albert) of Rardin, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, son, Robert Edgar Bennett; siblings, Anna Day, Frank Bennett, and Larry Bennett; two grandchildren; and one great grandchild, Alexis Sanders.

Bob was a 1955 graduate of Charleston High School. He proudly served 12 years in the Army where he held positions as a flight operations coordinator, paratrooper, and general. Bob has held many other numerous jobs throughout the years. He delivered trailers and other equipment for RexDon Transportation Company in Charleston, IL prior to retiring.

Throughout the years, Bob loved collecting cars, motorcycles, and looking for parts. He was what one would call a true picker! He enjoyed attending garage sales and finding any treasure he could. He was an avid traveler and loved to fish. Bob was a faithful member of the Oakland Christian Church and Northside Baptist Church in Charleston, IL.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.
