CHARLESTON, IL – Jeanne R. Martin, age 95 of Charleston, went to her Heavenly Home on Tuesday, October 29, 2019 while at the Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home in Mattoon. Visitation will be held from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 2, 2019 at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston. The Funeral Service, honoring and celebrating her life, will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral chapel with Reverend Tom Skinner officiating. Following cremation her cremated body will be inurned at Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston. Donations in her honor may be made to the Alzheimer’s Research Association and left at the visitation/service or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Dr., Charleston, IL 61920.
Jeanne was born May 31, 1924 in Charleston, Illinois, the only daughter of Tony and Blanche (Dunaway) Johns. She married Willford Hargis and he preceded her in death in 1976. She later married James Martin who also preceded her. She is survived by her and Willford’s three sons: Willford Hargis of Ashmore, Illinois, Steve Hargis and wife Goldie of Arcola, Illinois and Rockford “Roc” Hargis of Charleston; four grandchildren, Nathan T. Hargis and wife Shannon, Steve Hargis and wife Tanya, Jeremy Hargis, and Roxanne Murphy and husband Chris; numerous great-grandchildren; and her brother, Tom Johns of Charleston. Jeanne was also preceded by a brother, Tony Johns.
Jeanne, also known as “Tead”, a nickname given to her by her first husband, was a former member of East Harrison Street Church of God and eventually placed membership with the Enon Baptist Church family. She had formerly worked at the Brown Shoe Company in Charleston before accepting a position at the Charleston Community Hospital and later at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in the purchasing department.
Jeanne was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. As a result of growing up during the Great Depression, she was frugal and knew the value of a dollar. She was resourceful and determined in spirit, always making certain that her family was well cared for. She enjoyed woodworking, possessed artistic ability and was known to be a good cook and seamstress. She shared a love for motorcycles with her husband Willford and they enjoyed many outings together on the bike. Her family will always cherish their many fond memories.
Funeral Service The funeral service honoring and celebrating the life of Jeanne Hargis Martin was held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 2, 2019 at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston with Pastor Tom Skinner officiating. Her son, Willford Hargis shared scripture and memories of mom. Musical selections included recordings of "Always by Humble and Kind", "In The Garden" and "Amazing Grace". Her cremated body will be inurned in Roselawn Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, November 4, 2019 with Pastor Tim Gilbert officiating.
