Obituary

Gerald Douglas “Doug” Coartney, age 66, of Ashmore, IL went heaven bound on Friday, September 15, 2023 at St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, IL.  He was born October 16, 1956 in Charleston, IL, the son of Donald Wayne Coartney and Mary Elizabeth (Mackenzie) Coartney.  On October 23, 1976 he married Mary Jo Strader at Enon Baptist Church in Ashmore, IL. 

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Mary Jo Coartney of Ashmore, IL; children, Amanda Jo Gleckler (Chris) of Paris, IL and Kelly Douglas (Tori) of Ashmore, IL; grandchildren, Nicholas Allen Coartney, Mathew Douglas Coartney, and Ethan Douglas Glecker; siblings, Leland Duane “Bud” Coartney of Tucson, AZ, Donald Gary (Susan) Coartney of Queen Creek, AZ, Karen Sue Coartney of Charleston, IL, and Carl Rex Coartney of Fremont, NE. He also has numerous nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, Issac (Bill) Ceif and Flossie Childress Coartney, and Edgar and Esther (Rodgers) McKenzie.

Doug was a 1974 graduate of Charleston High School.  Upon graduating high school, he began farming full time and during winter months, had various jobs working as a parts store delivery driver, assistant to plumber, Rick Veach; and as an employee of the Department of Agriculture. After retirement, he joined Strader Farm as a seasonal worker, a grain cart driver for his brother-in-law, Jon Strader. He also sold produce to the community as Coartney Farms Garden Produce with his grandson, Mathew. Doug was a faithful member of the Ashmore Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday school director.

Doug’s past affiliations include being a former FFA member at Charleston High School, Farm Bureau for Young Farmers, a former member of the Ashmore Community Club and a past member of the Enon Baptist Church. He was also a past member and one time President of the Coles County Old Car Club. He was a current board member of the East Central Illinois Antique Farm Equipment Club and Ashmore’s Township Trustee. He was a former volunteer fire fighter in Ashmore, a member of the Charleston RC Stone Flyers, a past county FSA committee member and employee, and had been a race car driver at all three racetracks in Coles County. Doug also pulled Oliver tractors in the Southern Illinois Tractor Pulling Association. He was a current Storm Spotter EMA volunteer, and a certified member of the Illinois Southern Baptist Disaster Relief Team.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, September 22, 2023 at 10 a.m. at Adams Funeral Chapel with David Colvin officiating.  Burial will follow in the Enon Cemetery in Ashmore, IL.  Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 21, 2023 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL.
