Frank A. Fraembs Obituary

Frank A. Fraembs, age 91, of Charleston, IL (formerly of Henderson, KY) passed away peacefully at 8:29 p.m. on Sunday, February 11, 2024, at Odd Fellow-Rebekah Home in Mattoon, IL. He was born May 5, 1932, in Belleville, IL, the son of Herbert and Lorene (Schlesinger) Fraembs. He married Janet Railsback on October 23, 1954, in Western Springs, IL.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Janet; daughters, Lisa Fraembs of Charleston, IL, and Linda Fraembs (Mike Matulis) of Pleasant Plains, IL; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Fraembs; and daughter, Laura Fraembs.

After graduating from Barrett Manual Training High School in Henderson, KY, he attended Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL, earning his bachelor’s degree in zoology.  His education was interrupted by his Army service in the Korean Conflict, but he returned to Illinois to earn his master’s degree from the University of Illinois. Frank taught for over 30 years as a zoology professor at Eastern Illinois University. Prior to teaching at EIU, he was a professor at Illinois State University in Bloomington-Normal, IL.

Frank was a faithful member of Wesley United Methodist in Charleston, IL. He was also a long-term volunteer at Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site. He loved all things involving nature and supported many charitable organizations throughout the years. He enjoyed flying so much that he pursued his pilot’s license, and he also loved riding motorcycles. He also loved art and was a supporter of the arts. Frank was also known for sending postcards to friends, students, and family. He sent thousands of postcards during his life and many recipients looked forward to receiving them.

A gathering of friends will be held on Friday, March 1, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the parlor of the Wesley United Methodist Church, 2206 Fourth Street, Charleston, IL 61920.
