CHARLESTON, IL – Florence D. “Sammie” Giffin, age 91 of Charleston, passed away on Monday, February 24, 2020 while at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center. In accordance with her wishes, her body has been gifted for the benefit of medical education and research. It is her wishes that any memorial gifts in her honor be made to Old State Road Christian Church. Gifts may be mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920.
Florence was born July 16, 1928 in Glasgow, Kentucky, one of four children born to Dempsey and Hallie (Hughes) Samson. She shared her childhood years with two brothers, Eugene and Eddie, and a sister, Joyce. She was preceded in death by her brother, Eddie. Florence married Russell Johnson and he preceded her in death in May of 1962. They had one daughter, Elizabeth Johnson Coffey who also preceded her. She later married William Giffin who also preceded her in death in 1979. From both marriages, Florence gained an extended family including stepchildren and their families.
Sammie, as she was affectionately known, was employed as a deputy sheriff with the Coles County Sheriff’s Department for 20 years. She was a member of the Old State Road Christian Church and a former member of the Charleston Country Club, Women of the Moose Charleston Chapter 1175, Ladies of the Charleston Elks B.P.O.E. #623 of which she was a charter member and helped to organize.
Sammie enjoyed gardening, was a wonderful seamstress often making clothes for herself and Libby, and enjoyed a good game of cards. She enjoyed shopping, eating out and was always on the go!
