Eleanor Bonnell Obituary

Mrs. Eleanor Lee Mason Bonnell, age 88, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 26, 2023, in Mattoon, Illinois. Born in Miletus, West Virginia, on June 21, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Frank Paul Mason and the late Virginia (Givens) Mason Bernard.

Mrs. Bonnell was a piano teacher of private lessons and music director in several churches where her husband pastored. She was an honors graduate of Bridgeport High School in Bridgeport, West Virginia, and attended Ursinus College in Ursinus, Pennsylvania; Alderson-Broaddus College in Philippi, West Virginia; and West Virginia University-Parkersburg, where she studied music and liberal arts.

She was a faithful servant of the Lord and supporter of her husband’s ministry. Rev. Gary W. Bonnell retired as an ordained Baptist minister of the American Baptist Churches, with thirty-seven years of full-time ministry serving churches in West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois (including the First Baptist Church of Mattoon), Indiana, Kentucky (including Wallaceton Baptist Church), and Pennsylvania.

She was also a current member of the First Baptist Church of Richmond, Kentucky, and Simpson Creek Baptist Church of Bridgeport, West Virginia.

Mrs. Bonnell and her late husband, Rev. Gary W. Bonnell, were married for more than 50 years and had three children. She is survived by their three daughters, Marlene Malone married to Dr. Steven Malone of Portland, Oregon; and Michele Ryan of St. Louis, Missouri; and Melanie Roberts and also two grandchildren, Rebecca Roberts and Zeke Roberts of Mattoon, Illinois; and her aunt, Mary Alice Cox of Salem, WV.  Also, she is survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Ann Mason; and two brothers-in-law, Danny Yankey and Jimmy Huffman; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son-in-law Michael Roberts, brother Robert Paul Mason; and two half-sisters, Patty Yankey and Judi Huffman.

Funeral services will be conducted by Burnside Funeral Home in Bridgeport, West Virginia on Thursday, November 30, 2023, with visitation from 12:00 to 12:30 pm with the Christian funeral service following at 12:30 pm with Dr. Michael Hopkins officiating. Interment will be held following services at the Bridgeport Cemetery in Bridgeport, West Virginia.
