Donna Lee Tammen Obituary

Donna Lee Tammen, 77, of Charleston, IL, formerly of Gilman, IL, passed away on December 28, 2023, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, IL, surrounded by her sons. Born on June 1, 1946, she was the daughter of Walter Ellsworth Pence and Martha Leona (Gerdes) Pence. Donna was previously married to Jim Tammen of Gilman, IL, who currently resides in Lake Havasu City, AZ.

She is survived by her sons, Brad Tammen (Tammy) of Murfreesboro, TN, and Doug Tammen (Abby) of Charlottesville, VA; grandchildren, Adalida, Camden, Layla, Ava, and Emily; several nieces, nephews, and numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Terry and Ronnie Pence.

Donna graduated from Gilman High School in 1964 and pursued her passion for cosmetology at Skokie Beauty School in Skokie, IL, obtaining her license. For almost six decades, she showcased her talent as a hairstylist, touching the lives of countless clients through her salon, Donna’s Hair Creations, and later at Sassy Scissors in Charleston, IL.

An adventurer with a compassionate spirit, Donna dedicated her time to charitable events and, notably, provided hair services for loved ones at Adams Funeral Chapel. She was a devoted member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church and served as Vice President of the Illinois Torchbearer Lambda #T04402 Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, alongside being a member of Cosmetologists Illinois EAST Central. Donna cherished her connections with the "Girls of 64," a group of fellow Gilman High School graduates, bonding over shared memories. She also became an avid owl collector.

Family held a central place in Donna's heart. She actively supported her sons in their sports endeavors and adored her grandchildren, finding immense joy in their company. A resilient survivor of breast cancer for 15 years, Donna embraced life to the fullest, recently exploring the Caribbean Islands on her inaugural cruise with Doug. She passionately followed the Chicago Cubs, Fighting Illini, and Chicago Bears, rarely missing a game. She would enthusiastically share updates with Brad; her last text on Christmas Eve celebrated a rare Bears' victory.
