Carolyn Faye Ferris Obituary

Carolyn Faye Decker Ferris, age 79, of Greenup, IL, went to her heavenly Father on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center surrounded by her friends and family. Carolyn, or Mamaw to most, loved her Lord and Savior.  She was born in Springfield, TN on November 14, 1944, to Paul C. and Mossie L. (Osburn) Decker, who she had the greatest respect and admiration for.

She is survived by her loving husband, Darrell; son, Darrell Glenn Ferris, Jr.; daughter, Shannon (Brion) Storm; daughter, Melissa (Jay) Maxey; son, James (Kaylee) Ferris; 9 grandchildren,  Dara Storm, Garrett Storm, Cassie (Austin) Bickel, Jaylynn (Sebastian) Schober, Dakota (Nichole) Ferris, Macey Maxey, Jarin Maxey, Mason Ferris, and Makenlynn Ferris; 2 great-grandchildren, Owen Bickel and Adalee Maxey; brothers, Paul (Anne) Decker and Jeff (Angie) Decker; and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by two aunts, paternal aunt, Dora Sherrick of Sebring, FL, and her maternal aunt, Melba Rainwater, of Adams, TN, who held a very special place in her heart. Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, in-laws, and sister-in-law.

Carolyn loved the ocean and the numerous trips to Tennessee to see loved ones as a child. Carolyn graduated Class of 1962 at Charleston High School. She went on to be an accounting clerk for the City of Charleston. Throughout the years, she had many jobs in her community, but her greatest joy was raising her children and tending to her grandchildren.

Carolyn met the love of her life, Darrell, in 1956 at the Charleston Pool. Pool time turned to road time as they took rides on his metallic blue Harley Davidson and got pizza at Uncle Cal Williams. Excited to start their new lives together; the two were married on December 6, 1964, at Jack Oak by Reverend Fred Carlen.

Carolyn and Darrell couldn’t wait to start a family of their own, and their children meant the world to them. First was Glenn, born in 1965, then Shannon in 1967, followed by Melissa in 1971, and their last, James, was born in 1981.

Though she loved cooking, rocking on the porch, and petting her kitties, Carolyn’s favorite role was that of a grandparent. She was blessed with 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. She treasured time with her grandkids and loved being their Mamaw, never failing to offer a glass of tea and swing on the porch. When the grandkids were young, she would provide jars and milk jugs for each of them to catch lightning bugs during the hot summer nights.

Carolyn had a soft spot for her furry friends, treating each one like the valuable family member they were. She had many indoor puppies-Abby, Charlie, and Lollipop. Each of them was faithful companions not far from her chair.

Carolyn and Darrell’s friends were practically inseparable throughout their lives. Ray and DeeDee Winnett were with the family when she passed. DeeDee told stories of the campfires Ray cooked meat over, and Carolyn loved each time he did. They were together through it all.
