CHARLESTON, IL – Barbara Joanne Lawyer, age 77 of Charleston, was in the comfort of her home and in the loving care of her daughter when she went to her Heavenly Home on Wednesday, February 19, 2020. Visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 24, 2020 at Friendship Baptist Church, 18709 Harrison Street Road, Charleston. The Memorial Service honoring and celebrating her life will begin at 11:00 a.m., immediately following the visitation, with Pastor Tom Skinner officiating. Inurnment will be at Roselawn Cemetery in Charleston. Memorials in her honor may be made to Lincolnland Hospice and left at the visitation/service or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920.
Barbara was born May 23, 1942 in Coles County, Illinois and was the daughter of P. Wayne and Mildred (Burris) Craig. She married Larry Lawyer on February 15, 1958 and they shared just shy of 42 years of marriage before his death on February 4, 2000. Barbara is survived by her devoted daughter, Catherine Lawyer-Veach of Charleston and her loving companion Donnie Maxwell of Toledo; Barb’s special friend and companion, Jim Rose of Charleston; two brothers, Ralph Craig and wife Patricia of Charleston and Larry Craig of Neoga, Illinois; a sister, Jane Lemons and husband David of Manchester, Tennessee; and two aunts, Vera Moreton and Marian Finch, both of Charleston. Barb was also survived by a dear, long-time neighbor and special friend, Sharon Davis; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Barb had four cousins, Tom Hildebrand, Dianne Moreton-Ellington, Sue Weddell and Terry Grissom, who helped take good care of her and were ever present with their love and support.
Barb spent more than 24 years working at the Mattoon Garment Factory and was also supervisor of the Hallmark Dept. at Walgreens in Charleston. She was a woman who possessed a deep and abiding faith with strong Christian values and was a devout member of Friendship Baptist Church in Charleston. She loved antiques and enjoyed the search for that special one that would complement her home. Barb was gifted with an artistic ability and her works as a decorative painter were to be admired. As a devoted wife and loving mother, seeing to the needs of her family was her priority in life. She was always considerate of others and humble in spirit. When describing Barb, kind words were always spoken by those who knew and loved her. She will always be remembered with the same love and devotion that she extended to others.
FUNERAL SERVICE
The Funeral Service honoring and celebrating the life of Barbara J. Lawyer was held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 24, 2020 at Friendship Baptist Church with Pastor Tom Skinner officiating. Recorded musical selections included "Just A Closer Walk With Thee", "Old Rugged Cross", "Precious Memories" and "I'd Like To Stroll Over Heaven With You". Inurnment followed in Roselawn Cemetery, Charleston. Urn Bearers were Tom Hildebrand and Diane Moreton-Ellington.
