Barbara Galvidis Obituary

CHARLESTON, IL – Barbara Jean Galvidis, age 90 of Charleston and formerly of Menifee, California, entered her heavenly home while surrounded by loving family on Thursday, June 25, 2020.  There will be no services locally and inurnment will be in Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California.   Memorial gifts in her honor may be made to the American Cancer Society for Breast Cancer Awareness or to the Coles County Humane Society.  Gifts may be mailed in care of Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL  61920.

Barbara was born November 11, 1929 in Gary, Indiana, the daughter of the late James E. and Dorothy (Hixenbaugh) DeFoor.  She was married to Edward Galvidis and later to Paul Farel and both have preceded her in death.  She was also preceded in death by her children, Karen O’Brien and Mike McConnell; and two sisters, Joyce DeFoor and Bebe Mohler.  She is survived by a loving niece who was also her caregiver, Cheryl Lopez of Charleston; four grandchildren, Courtney Veasey and Patrick of California, Daniel O’Brien of Michigan, and Sara McConnell and Travis and Scott McConnell, also of California; a great-grandchild, Hartley; her son-in-law, Russell O’Brien of Michigan; and several great-nieces and great-nephews and their families.

For many years, Barbara served as an insurance agent for Continental Insurance Company.   She was a devoted Christian woman and always looked forward to meeting in fellowship with her Bible Study group.  Barbara knew and appreciated the blessing of being a cancer survivor and she experienced a great deal of happiness through life’s simple pleasures.  She always loved her home and from her kitchen came the aromas of freshly baked family favorites.  She loved flowers, watching old movies, reading a good book, and the cats and dogs that she befriended through the years.  The love and affection Barbara felt for her family was treasured by all who embraced it.  She will truly be missed.
