Dr. Albert William Schubert Obituary

Albert William Schubert, MD, age 75, of Charleston, IL (formerly of Great Bend, KS) passed away peacefully at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at Willow Breeze Hospice House in Mattoon, IL following a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s and a recent struggle with COVID. He was born June 16, 1948 in Great Bend, KS to Albert William Gustave Sr. II and Hazel (Pagenkopf) Schubert. On August 20, 1994 he married Karla Dunne-Pine at the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center Chapel in Mattoon, IL.

Survivors include his loving wife of thirty years, Karla Schubert of Charleston, IL; sons, Matthew Schubert, Jon Schubert, and A.J. Schubert; stepson, Ryan Pine MD (Jerri)  of Charleston, IL; stepdaughter, Jessica Swisher (Joe) of Charleston, IL; sister, Phyllis Marsh (Dale) of Salina, KS; niece, Ginger Armbrust (Andy) of Salina, KS; nephew, Christopher Marsh (Jamie) of Clark, CO; grandsons, Jobe and Cade Pine of Charleston, IL; six great-nieces and nephews; and very special friend, Gene Gray of Mattoon, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Hazel.

Will graduated from Great Bend High School and earned his undergraduate degree at Kansas University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 1970. He pursued his medical degree at Kansas University Medical Center, earning his MD in 1974. His residency in Ophthalmology took place from 1974-1977, during which he became chief resident in Ophthalmology at VA Hospital in Kansas City, MO, and scored in the top one percent on his Clinical Assessment Examination for senior residents.

Establishing his Ophthalmology practice in Charleston, IL, in 1977, Dr. Schubert operated at Link Clinic and played a pivotal role in fundraising for the inception of Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon, IL. His solo practice focused on Comprehensive Ophthalmology, specializing in glaucoma and cataract surgery, until his retirement in 2018. Will was an active member of the Coles County Medical Society, Illinois State Ophthalmology Society, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He served on various boards and committees, contributing significantly to the medical community at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.

A devoted member of Charleston Lutheran Church, Will enjoyed pursuits such as fly fishing, golf, and tennis. Renowned among colleagues and cherished by patients, he was known for his kindness, consideration, and easygoing nature.
